Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can attend Westside Extension classes?

Anyone can attend a Westside Extension class.   Unless specified in the course description, classes are designed for those age 18 or older.  College for Kids classes will detail what age or grade levels are suitable.  For reasons of safety, liability, and fairness, no one - including spouses or children - can sit in a class without first enrolling.

2. Will I get grades or college credits for a Westside Extension class?

Westside Extension classes are fee-based, not-for-credit classes.  There are no grades or transcripts and college credits cannot be granted.

3. So what if I want evidence of attending a Westside Extension class?

A Certificate of Attendance can be issued for any Westside Extension class as long as the instructor's attendance roster shows you attended the full session.  Cost of such a certificate is $10 and up to three classes can be put on one certificate.  Depending on whether rosters are already in the office, it can take up to three weeks to issue a certificate.

4. How do I register for a class?

There are 3 easy ways to register for a Westside Extension class:

• Online – Complete a student profile, add to your cart all the classes you wish to take, and pay online with your credit card or debit card.

• By Phone – Call us at (310) 287-4475.  Be sure to have your credit or debit card handy along with information on the classes you wish to take.

• Walk-in – Drop by our offices on the West Los Angeles College Campus.  We are located in the Fine Art Building, Room 202. Services now offered in-person!

We accept cash, money orders (no personal checks), gift certificates, debit cards and credit cards (Visa, MasterCard or Discover Card; sorry, no American Express).

Please note that payment is required to register for a class – we cannot reserve spaces in a class without payment.

5. Can I register on the first day of class?

Yes, as long as space is available.  However, we strongly encourage you to register in advance.  Many of our classes are very popular and fill up quickly.  On the other hand, if you wait until too close to the day of class, you run the risk of finding out that the class has been cancelled due to low enrollment.  Registering in advance gives you parking and other helpful info to help you get the most out your class.  Online registration is not available the day a class begins, so at that point you will need to phone or walk in.  If you are registering the day of class, please allow at lesat 30 minutes to park, walk in, and get to class – especially on Saturday mornings.

6. What is the cancellation policy?

Refund or transfer requests may be granted ONLY if you notify the Westside Extension Office AT LEAST 5 DAYS BEFORE CLASS BEGINS that you wish to make a change - so please choose your classes carefully. This applies to any and all changes to the original registration – including transfers and credits. Refunds, transfers, or credits CANNOT be granted once class begins and CANNOT be issued for absences or if you register within five days of class. Missed class meetings cannot be made up in another class.

WEST LANGUAGE ACADEMY, PHLEBOTOMY, AND HEALTH INSURANCE BILLING, CODING & CLAIMS HAVE SEPARATE AND DIFFERENT CANCELLATION POLICIES, SO CHECK THE "PLEASE READ" SECTION OF EACH CLASS BEFORE REGISTERING.

Notification of cancellation may be done by phone, in person, or email. Refunds or transfers must be processed by the Extension office – you cannot do it yourself online. A $10 processing charge will be deducted for each class refund or transfer, except for classes cancelled by Westside Extension. If you paid by credit card, your account will be credited. If you paid by cash or money order, you will receive a check refund (allow 2-3 weeks for processing). A credit toward other Westside Extension classes may be issued in lieu of a refund if you wish. Of course no processing fee is charged when a class is cancelled by Westside Extension.

7. Will I receive a class confirmation receipt in the mail?

To be greener, we send receipts and class confirmations by email. Note that you can also access your confirmation receipts at any time using our online system.  Sign in and select Current Registrations along the left menu.  Find your class and click on Registration Confirmation to view your receipt.  To see a listing of your payments, select My Transactions.

8. What is the material fee policy/to whom do I pay the materials fee/what do I need to bring to class?

Some Westside Extension classes have material fees for additional supplies or books. These fees are for items provided by the instructor as a convenience to you. To save class time and ensure the integrity of the student/teacher relationship, such fees are no longer collected in class. They will be collected at time of registration or you will be directed to where you can purchase directly. Westside Extension and the LACCD are held harmless for any disputes arising out of any material fees transaction between you and the instructor.

9. Why do classes get canceled?

Classes generally get canceled when there aren't enough students enrolled.  Decisions to cancel a class are usually made 2-3 days prior to the first class meeting, so we advise you to register early and not wait until the last minute.  If Westside Extension cancels a class, you will receive a full refund of your registration fees.
